Adult Riders
At Grove House Stables we have a wide range of horses to suit all ages and abilities of adult riders, whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced jockey! We provide comprehensive equestrian training from hourly lessons through to examination courses. Many of our adult riders return to riding after a period of time of not riding, either because of work and family commitments or simply just that they have not had the opportunity to ride since childhood. On your first visit to us we would arrange an assessment lesson of either 30 or 60 minutes (depending on your level of fitness and the price you are happy to pay). During this session, we would use the time to assess your current riding ability and level of fitness and to understand your aspirations/ambitions. From this lesson we will then recommend suitable lessons for you in the future. Prior to booking we will ask you how much riding you have done (and how long ago), your height, weight, DOB, and a contact telephone no. On arrival we will ask you to complete a form telling us whether you have any medical conditions and explaining our cancellation policy .
If you have ridden in the past you may already own riding equipment. If your hat does not meet the current minimum standard P.A.S 015 or B.S. E.N. 1384 or is more than 5 years old, you will need to use one of our hats (it is a good idea to arrive approximately 15 minutes early for your first lesson, so that we can fit a hat to you). If your is more than 5 years old or has possibly been damaged in a fall – you must throw it way and purchase a new one.
It is a good idea to bring a waterproof coat, as lessons continue regardless of the weather. If you have not ridden before, wear comfortable leggings or loose fitting jeans, flat shoes (with just a very low heel) or wellies (no trainers). It is a good idea if you are using one of our hats for the first few lessons, that you then purchase your own hat and boots (make sure that the retailer has been trained by BETA to fit your hat correctly). You may also decide to purchase a body protector – again this must not be second hand and must be fitted to you by a trained retailer.
We have a number of different types of lessons (see our yellow leaflet for further details) to suit each individual. These sessions can be mixed and matched according to your individual learning goal. During the evenings we run both dressage and jumping sessions for more experienced riders wishing to "brush up" on their riding skills and wanting to progress further. During the day- time and evening, we also have general group sessions (maximum of 8 riders) for improving and experienced riders (each group is ability based).
As a beginner we would concentrate initially on your confidence, co-ordination and balance. You will progress at your own speed moving onto the next stage when you are happy and you have established the basic skills. We have a motto, "your enjoyment is our priority". The speed of your progression will depend on a number of factors, including how regularly you are able to ride, your level of fitness and how comfortable you are around large animals, if you have natural balance and co-ordination you will find that you progress more easily. Any one can ride and we will work at your pace making sure that you enjoy the experience.
